NFL BOOK CORNER: Book review of Life is Gift by Tony Bennett

Welcome to the Natural Fitabulous Lifestyle's Book Corner

I decided to revive my blogging activities by sharing something I am absolutely passionate about and that is books, especially Memoirs and Biographies.

Today I will be sharing about my latest intellectual goody and that is Life is A Gift by Tony Bennett.
My excitement upon finishing the book last night:
"Wohooo I am done reading this delicious totally awesome amazing stupendous book and I have to tell youuuuuuuu!!!
Oh my! Okay where do I start... The guy marched @ Selma and has been close friend to Belafonte for years.
When I read the book of Dr Martin King sister last year she mentioned the role Belafonte played in their lives. So here I am reading again about this man whose voice I have love sinc...e I was a little girl! Oh I had a crush on him because he was so handsome!
Okay back on track, I was saying... Belafonte invited Benett to walk with them in March 1965. And he shares in the book that amazing story of how all the performers who attended find have a stage to perform so a mortician donated some coffins that were used to create a platform for them.
Don't you just love how reading teach you things from a different facet?
Memoirs reveal things that history books can't and that's one of the many things I love about books. I shared his Selma story with my kids today and we went from discussing Selma to a few other things! Learning never stop and reading is so much fuuuuunnn!!!

Just to show a few of the people mentioned in the book :

Ella and Bennett were very close and lived near each other in California. She was a close family friend to him and his girls.

Amy Winehouse recorded with him her last song before she died 4 months after. The song was a favorite of her dad ' Body and Soul'!

Louis Armstrong: Benett painted his portrait and Louis teased that he out Rembrandted Rembrant and hang the portrait in his office. When Armstrong home was turned into a museum the portrait was kept in the same location.

SINATRA was his mentor and eventually his best friend. He credits Sinatra to being the one that gave him his big breakthrough because Sinatra's public praises of him gave him a big recognition.Sinatra taught him the importance of supporting the younger generations.

Bennett created an Art sShool in Astoria NY and named it after Sinatra. http://franksinatraschoolofthearts.org/

 Throwback from March 28.....
"What are you guys up to?
I'm back from the ranch and it's #datenight with #tonybennett!
Like #princeroyce would say #thatsclassrightthere this guy is not just a legend he is what good music is all about! Oh my and to learn about Duke Ellington (who was one of his close friends) and learn all the rich 'behind the scenes' history of the music industry is just too fascinating!"

Now that I am done reading this delicious book I will have to tell you what I absolutely love about it:

SEVEN THINGS I LOVE ABOUT THE BOOK

1) Reading memoirs gives you facets of historical facts and moments that school books can't ever give.

2) I love that he wasn't just a singer but also a painter and is now learning sculpting. This to me shows that being an artist doesn't mean you confine yourself to one form of expression. I love that he would go between painting or singing when one project was too overwhelming.

3) I love that I learned some musical and artistic techniques from him. Even though I am not a singer I can appreciate learning more about music.

4) I love all his tips and lessons on the importance on being true to yourself. This alone is powerful lesson in itself!

5) I loved that BEAUTY matters to him because I too love to see beauty in everything.

6) I love learning about other celebrities like Lena Horne, Belafonte that I absolutely love, Louis Armstrong. It is fun to see how they impacted each others.

7) I love that he lived long enough, still living, to share his ups and down with so much class and inspiration.

I could go on but just read this delightful book for yourself and let me know what you think of it!

What is something inspiring that you read recently? What would you recommend for my next reading selection? Answer me here or on my facebook page!

Quick Meals + Messy Kitchen Cooking with a Really Real Housewife Of...

Yay I am back to blogging!

At least for tonight!

I am skipping my workout, not reading a book, not watching TV (something I rarely do anyway) so I figured that a little blogging after cooking dinner would do wonders for my soul.

To all of you who used to follow my blog, I know I have really been seriously MIA, especially since having my 4th child. But despite my silence, I assure you that all is well.
Having a 4th child five years after my previous pregnancy, has certainly changed my family's dynamics a lot. Thankfully in a positive way but it is nonetheless demanding.

I had started a wellness Facebook page since my having my fourth child and this is where you can catch up on my activities with you are a Facebook user.

I have also recently launched own brand, making organic skincare products mainly and you can learn more about my amazing products on @ N'nako

In addition to that, I have recently launched the N'nako Book Club group on Facebook that you are welcome to join if you are a reader.

Now that I am done catching up some, this blog tonight is just about Foooood yes, food.

I wanted to share my quick meal tonight  so here it is:

I had my 9 years old son help with some of the prepping.
He cut and boiled some potatoes to serve as a side dish.

He also cut the boneless chicken thighs and the orange bell pepper. We picked orange simply because he said he liked the color! lol ( got to do whatever it takes to keep them excited about cooking)

30 minutes after my little sous chef assisted me, I pulled out the mini processor to make a quick mix that would serve as a marinade and flavor my quick dinner.

Once the potatoes were ready I layered them with cheese and baked them for less than 30 minutes.

I decided to pull out the rice cooker to made an additional side dish because my children love rice and looking at that yummy chicken on my stove I new a fresh bed of white rice would do those peppers more justice.

Since I didn't workout today and wasn't planning on eating a big salad plate I simply used a small tortilla to serve me as dinner.

The kids loved their meal, plenty of potatoes left to serve them for lunch during our homeschooling hours.
That delicious chicken will not survive the night but what can I say!
That was a pretty tasty fast and easy meal!

Now, sweeping the kitchen and drying dishes is left to them. Oh yes, I believe in delegating!

Yes I did say drying dishes. I don't use my dishwasher ha ha! If you haven't heard, us "African Be Like"...we don't care much this noisy water guzzling kitchen appliance! Ha ha ha

But despite the fact that my little hard working hands are always in the water, I can still brag of having some soft and pretty hands!

Of couuurse I have a secret!
Of course I will share it with you...
Shea Butter soufflé by N'nako.
I always keep some in my kitchen drawers. That soufflé works wonders on laborious hands and for your body overall.

That same Shea Butter soufflé worked some miracles on all those dark stretch marks I had as a result of my 4 pregnancies.
Sorry a before of after of my waistline would not fit the scope of this blog, we are still focusing on food you know!
But meet me on my page N'nako because I would soon upload a picture on the subject :-)

Alright, so this really real housewife of Tennessee is done blogging for tonight. But I was wondering.
For those of you who don't live in a city that is represented by the Real Housewives Series...what item would you pose with if you were to pretend that you were a Real Housewife?

To all my fellow moms out there, I am eager to know, so if you are ever on Instagram tag me to show me #nnako_goodhealthdiva or post on my Facebook wall

Thanks in advance for sharing and thanks for reading!
I hope to hear from you soon!

Fitness Motivation for weight Loss " Show UP"

Transformation & Throwback Thursday!

Here's sort of my double whammy with what I pray will be a little motivation for anyone out there on their journey who feels that they are not yet where they want to be.
I honestly wish I was the type who could brag about being at the gym so many times a week or having a block of time dedicated to fitness. But not only I am a mom of 4 with no real support system, but I also homeschool my older children which forces me to be more creative with my time management.
I can't brag either about losing weight fast, I have never been a fast & furious kind of girl. I tend to plan things ahead and take my time and go with the flow.

I know what I want to look like eventually, I don't plan on starving myself or sleeping on the treadmill to make it happen.
I don't have any 6 packs pictures to share yet but if there is one thing I strongly believe in, is the concept of SHOWING UP! Even if it's just 15 minutes to an hour!

I have learned (took me a while I admit) that the secret isn't to deprive myself of this or that, but to show up, do the work, do my best and stay consistent with what I do before, during and after I show up!
Showing up allowed me to do today things I couldn't even do two years or even 2 months ago! Like wall sit for a minute! Yes, my legs shake like crazy when I do ha ha ha...but I am getting better and that's what keep it fun!

So wherever you are in your journey, especially if you are just starting, feeling stuck or starting over...keep on keeping on...show up...even if it's just in your driveway!

Losing weight after pregnancy: My journey from overweight to fit mom

11 years ago today, I was checking in Crawford Long hospital in Atlanta to give birth to my first son.
Being a new mom, this day was full of unknowns. I was just out of college, married less than a year, and about to have a baby in a new city and in a country I only planned to live in as a 'student'.

My husband and my mother were with me, I was over 165 lbs and about to have an induced labor because I was weeks passed my due date. The induced labor was a vain procedure. After spending all night in painful expectancy, my son had to be delivered via C-section the next day in the early afternoon. I gave birth to a beautiful boy who weighted 9lbs 6 oz.

Forward this 11 years later...I am no longer over 165 lbs, the little boy is now taller than me, it doesn't take much...I didn't mentioned that I am 4'11" did I? 11 years later I am now a mother of 4, had my 4th C-Section over a year ago, started my 'health fitness journey' in July 2012 and truth be told, I feel like I just scratched the surface because somedays, I think that I have barely began.
I am not being hard on myself, I am just being real, I say this because there is just so much that I want to do and this stage feels like 'preparation'.  It's okay though, because being prepared is very important .

Talking of preparation, the past 11 years have been such a rollercoaster and technically speaking,I hate rollercoasters but I have grown to appreciate and value the necessities of lows and highs.
Lows I have had many. After my first son, it was just me and my husband, no support system and no help to raise our first child. Due to the fact that I gave birth to my son way passed my due date, my mom who had spent a month with me had to return back home, and my husband's family was miles away.
Yes, new life, new town, new responsibilities, tons of unknowns, some fear, BUT the only constant was my prayer life that would help me through all the challenges I was facing then and beyond.

Facing the unknown
Being a new mom wasn't just the hard part. The hardest part of all was the conflicts in identity I was dealing with. I was no longer a college student, I was no longer just a little sister to my brothers, a daughter to my parents, I was now a wife to an American ( I am African by the way) and a mother to a boy that I will not get the chance to raise on my birth continent like my cousins and sister raised their kids. So many things were now to be different forever and if this wasn't enough, 'being a fat girl' added a whole lot to my inner drama.
I had no clue that weight gain could affect someone the way it affected me! Mind you I was the lean, or skinny girl, the social butterfly and pretty confident friend that you could always count on and suddenly...I became fat, insecure, shy, and started secluding myself. I would turn down invitations to go out, stopped being active and just started hiding....it took me a while to realize that the lack of activity was just adding fuel to the fire ....anyway...

Getting unstuck...but...
I gradually made some changes, spent lots of time reading and researching about health and fitness, organic living, worked out at home doing Taebo, walking outdoors and walking/running on the treadmill. With each pregnancy I managed to gain less weight that I did during my first one.

I have been doing relatively good until my 4th C-section. A day I thought was my last and the hardest time of my life as a mother. That day was everything but normal. I had gotten so used to having   C-sections that, by the 4th one I knew what to expect! Well, so I thought! That day that was just 10 days away from my 35th birthday had some unpleasant surprises!
There is something weird that happens to you when death try to send you a message that you are not untouchable.

...Life's slap in the face
The months to follow were the hardest of my life and I thought I was going to lose my mind. So much seemed to fall apart at a time when I thought I was finally starting to get things together.
But something happened...one day my husband insisted that I go on a run with him. For years I had refused because I didn't want to be the 'fat girl running'...that day, I was so tired of making excuses that I went for it....this is when my mind and my body started changing. That day, all the reading and the researching I did about healthy living...all of it finally clicked....it's like running was the dimensional element that would bring all of it together for me...not long after, I started a Facebook page and started sharing my experiences and encouraging others, but since I love to learn and inform, the page is also educational and all my posts are guided by my desire to educate and inspire and not so much to entertain.

I have always liked to make people feel better but I also love to read and share. Creating that first Facebook page has been a positive outlet for me. It's my prayer that people be blessed and inspired beyond what I can imagine. I am not driven by numbers there because sadly, I have remained shy and somewhat comfortable with a 'small circle' around me!  I don't share too much of myself all the time because I am a private person who prefer one on one interactions. Staying true to myself, I pray that whatever I choose to share will make a difference for someone.

It took me years to gain back the confidence I lost when I first became overweight 11 years ago. To be honest, I haven't gained all of it back! I am certainly doing better than I used to. I am shedding the pounds, staying active, rewriting the scripts of my life, learning that I don't have to be 'stuck' in a habit, a mentality or a dress size.

Sculpting a new mind and a new life
After realizing just how much the extra weight had affected my mind & emotions and not just my body, I have made it my lifelong mission to sculpt my mind first. I feed my mind positivity, carefully select what I watch or listen to. I monitor my emotions and my attitude and I continue to pray daily.

I find myself praying a lot for young ladies, for new brides, new moms who don't know what they don't know and who will be caught off guard. I pray also for the ones who have been moms for a long time who struggle with their weight or feel stuck in a given area of their luves.

Well, got to stop here, baby number 4 is crying....join us on the FB page, I will add more pictures to this post so come back and check the updates!
