Brown Sugar and Raw Honey Scrub

The Raw Honey and Brown Sugar Scrub.

I am a strong believer in using kitchen ingredients to pamper and treat myself.

The Raw Honey & Brown Sugar Scrub is excellent for your face, as a body scrub and for  rough areas on your body, such as elbows, knees and feet. For a wonderful scrub that you can use once or twice per week, here is all that you need to do:

Ingredients:

  • Raw honey: The use of raw honey gently exfoliates the skin and stimulates circulation without causing irritation and dryness. Raw honey is a humectant which has the quality of attracting and retaining moisture, so it balances the skin moisture to give a soft glowing complexion. Another one of the amazing raw honey benefits for skin is its protection against sunburns.
  • Brown Sugar: Exfoliating the skin with a brown sugar scrub cleans and tightens pores giving the skin a more even uniform appearance; pores look smaller, skin tone more even. It can also diminish the damage to the skin caused by acne and other skin conditions. Using a brown sugar scrub improves your skin's ability to retain its natural moisture balance.
  • Oil such as Olive Oil, Almond Oil, Tea tree oil or other body oil I add a few drops to make the paste more manageable.
  • Essential Oil (optional) Scented oils such as lavender, eucalyptus and others, should never be used directly on skin so make sure to mix to oil or lotion prior to using.
  • Wash Cloth

Directions:
  • Mix 1 TBSP Raw Honey to 1 TBSP of Brown Sugar Add drops of  oil geared. If prone to   acne, some oils will help with controlling it . Consider peppermint, tea tree or rosemary for example.
  •  Apply the mixture to a clean face in upward circular motions for 3-5 minutes. Take your damp warm wash cloth and gently wipe the mixture off of your face. Repeat until the scrub is completely removed. Follow with a cool water rinse. Tone. Moisturize.
Oh my Goodness, your face is going to faithfully thank you for this one. Your skin is going to feel extremely smooth as the facial removes excess oil and dead skin cells through exfoliation.
If dealing with acne  this scrub works overtime to relieve you from it
And really, who doesn't want healthy, smooth, hydrated skin?

I try to do this facial scrub at least two times per week. I love this scrub because it's inexpensive and works wonders. Give it a try before you spend your money on chemical peels, commercial facial scrubs, etc.

How to make a delicious cappuccino.

My recipe for a delicious cappucino & a beautiful day

We are told to smell the roses each time we are encouraged to relax, take it easy and enjoy life. For a gardener like me I don't just limit myself to smelling the roses, I need to smell the Coffee as well to have a brighter day. You know... make it a " beautiful morning". During my pregnancy I had to limit my daily intake but I would literally open the cupboards and sniff the coffee. Smelling the coffee made me feel soooo much better.

If you are a coffee drinker I hope this post will make you smile!

I am not addicted to coffee by any means ( yes I say it humbly, they are people way worst), one to two cups a day is enough to make me happy especially when I have a lot to get done and I need a 'happy' boost!!!

Okay my own little disclaimer here before we get rolling:Too much coffee is not healthy but being happy is a healthy thing !!!

So today I wanted to simply share my own recipe for homemade cappuccino and share my happiness.

My sister in-law was visiting recently and when I offered her some coffee she replied that she wasn't a coffee person and wasn't very familiar with cappuccinos. I offered to make her a cup and she asked to have just a little.
I made her half a cup. She complained at first that I had given her too much but when I asked her minutes later if she liked it, she raised her empty cup and flipped it upside down to show me there wasn't even a drop left in it ...her proof that she liiiiiked.  So I figured...if she liked it why not 'show her how I do it'...

This is just my personal version I want to learn yours so please share your tips. If you have never made one please try this recipe and let me know how you like it!!!

My Ingredients:
  • Coffee grounds.
African coffee is (with Brazilian brands of course) my favorite. After all I grew up on the motherland!!! Coffee from Ivory Coast

Image of African coffee grounds from Ivory Coast

is the best from the continent if you ask me, but oh well that's just my biais opinion.
  • Sugar. I prefer brown sugar

  • Cinnamon
  • Honey
  • Flavoring syrup. I love Hazelnut
  • Milk.  I prefer Silk Almond milk instead of dairy.
  • Whip cream would be yuuummmy but optional. I stopped using it as much as I used to just because I am watching the calories, otherwise it's a great indulgence!!!
  • One of many favorite cups/mugs of course!!!

Okay so what do I do?
Make the coffee as usual,
foam or warm my 1/4 cup milk ( I prefer to warm about a cup or more on the stove my kids love to drink the warm leftover).

Ready: A tablespoon of Hazelnut syrup, pour coffee in the mug, add milk, brown sugar, add a little bit of honey stir, top with whip cream ( optional) and add cinnamon.
 And voila!!!

Why Cinnamon? It not only adds flavor but also helps with weight loss soooo it's a way to limit the damage and have a drink packed with flavor!!!

What's your favorite morning drink? How do you make it?
Never had or made a cappuccino? Try and let me know how you like it!

TEA TIME al fresco

I am so excited! Just received a package from my sweet friend K.A in Boston who just returned from Paris!
In the box were those precious and very special items!

The culinary treat, ha ha ha, are Madeleines au beurre, (butter Madeleines) they are so gooood and it has been years since I indulged in some! The magazines are as you can see Marie Claire Maison, (Marie Claire Home) and Marie Claire Idees (Marie Claire ideas or more Marie Claire arts & crafts). Most people probably know Marie Claire when it come to their fashion edition. I am not much of a fashionista so I stick to my passion for Home decor and Crafts!

Marie Claire Idees was introduced to me by a friend who visited me from Paris (France) about 6-5 years ago. She knew I loved art and crafts so she brought me back a few magazines and Marie Claire Idees were the ones I  mostly fell in love with! Every time I receive a package from Paris, in addition to treats I get some French magazines but it's been a while since I got a Marie Claire Idees. I was so excited I could not even browse it properly going from page to page excited to see what good stuff I would find...So I decided to take 25 minutes away from the children to indulge....

I normally would have had tea at this time of the day but Madeleines are to me a special childhood pleasure so I opted for a comforting drink that took me back to the most peaceful times of my life! French magazines, Madeleines and warm milk with honey and cinnamon...enjoying those with the voice of my favorite song by singer Andrea Bocelli....

My twin sister is the one who first introduced me to his beautiful voice and to this particular song. This song has had such a profound impression on me the first time she played it that each time I am in need of serenity I listen to his music. I found this one recently on the internet and it was like finding a lost loved one.  Listening to it send me into a deep nostalgic yet happy state.
My tea time today was like therapy to reconnect to the best things of my childhood as my birthplace is suffering so many destructions. For months the city has suffered so many unpleasant things and this week has been the worst, so I needed something more special than a regular cup of tea!  My friend's gift arrived at the perfect time and nature embraced me with open arms as the weather was very conducive to having tea time in the garden!

A lot of childhood memories have come back to my mind since the events of this week in my birthplace. I needed to relieve the stress and after my mom's visit this afternoon and her sharing more details of some of the chaos going on in my hometown my stress level was seriously increasing. I don't like to cary stress in my mind or in my body so I needed something therapeutic and I needed quick!
A special memory I had today was how my siblings and I, (and every friend who would join us), used to take our afternoon snacks on the patio or spread a tablecloth on the lawn.  Unlike those innocents years, today I don't have time to spend hours enjoying myself in such a manner. Today I only had 25 minutes to recreate the best I could a peaceful memory with French reading materials and snacks. I needed that this Friday afternoon.

I needed to count my blessings, take some times to enjoy the afternoon breeze, create a moment of serenity in a busy day and in a week where all the distant news I have received were far from good.
I needed to give thanks and enjoy being so blessed with a wonderful family and wonderful friends who would send me a gift all the way from Paris!

I can not say it enough! Making time for oneself even if it's just 15 minutes a day can pay great dividend in our mental, emotional and physical health! I just wanted to share how I made 25 minutes a gift to myself just so that I can be better to my family! So you might not be able to afford tea time in a fancy restaurant but you can turn a little corner of your deck, balcony or home into a refuge for just 15-30 minutes!  If you spend the day caring for others you have to find ways to care for yourself for just a few minutes! This is actually very important if stress seems to be constant part of your life!

Tea time is a nurturing time for me regardless of if it's very early in the morning, sometimes in the afternoon or right before heading to bed!
Do you have such a nurturing time in your day? If yes what makes that time so nurturing to you?  If you don't do you see through this post a reason to create such moments for yourself? What do you like to drink you tea with? Do you have a favorite cake or cookie you use to accompany your tea?

How to knock out a cold the natural way!

Hello!!!
How are you doing? I hope all is well with you, I appreciate you stopping by!
I am currently working on the article I promised you all last week, my interview with my Natural friend Africa Brown, but something came up...
There's a nasty cold trying to knock here and I won't be having it!
I am knocking out this cold the N'natural way!! Cute hein?!N'na my name, the natural way...I might stick to this ..N'natural! N'natural way!!!Hum! Pretty good!!!

Ok let's get down to business (smiles)!
I was working on the article that I am concocting for April 1st and I have a lot of  work to do because Africa and I are sharing a lot of stuffs, adding plenty of pictures and I suggest you get ready to just hangout on the blog! Pick some time over the week-end, make yourself comfortable and come hangout with Africa and N'na because if you like Natural hair you might have some fun here!

Initially,I was not planning on writing today but dealing with a cold I felt like it might benefits others to know how I knock out a cold! (Little disclaimer here this is by no mean supposed to replace medical advice, I am just sharing what works for me)

Even though I normally drink some healthy homemade fruit smoothies or freshly made carrot blends, today I needed to step up my game. Here is what I did this morning.

Here is my good health lab and work station loaded with the ingredients to my N'natural cold remedy!

My N'natural ingredients:
                        3 Lemons and 1 orange
                        2 Carrots
Parsley grown from my container garden on my deck
Fresh Garlic I just use 1 clove
                        1/2tablespoon of Apple cider vinegar
Frozen bananas I used just 2 pieces
                        Frozen apples and blueberries
                        Flaxseed
                        Honey
                        Oregano,
                        Fennel
                        Turmeric

1st Step
I juiced my citrus fruits because I am not using any water or other liquid. I am juicing 3 lemons and 1 orange. The virtue of citrus fruits especially lemon is common knowledge right?! Full of Vitamin C, anti-bacterial,  etc. But did you know that lemon juice can relieve fevers and reduce the body temperature? We will get back to lemon another time!

Step 2

I am chopping my carrots, 1 clove of garlic and some fresh parsley from my container garden on my deck.
Why carrots?  Carrots have vitamins C, B, E,D ( said in a singing voice) and K in addition to beta-carotene, and magnesium, potassium and lot of other good stuffs!
I mean carrot juice is said to be so good for your health it will take another day to dig into all that!  I frequently blend some fresh carrot juice but I think today I needed more for my skin in addition to all the other things carrot juice can offer me! I mean, when you are not feeling the best it kind of shows on your skin doesn't it?! I thought so! So I need my skin looking good too! I want good health from the inside out!

Why garlic? Garlic has long had the reputation for preventing and healing colds because it helps maintains healthy blood circulation, it strengthens the immune system, strengthens the body's defense, when chopped chewed or bruised it releases allicin. Allicin is a sulfur compound that's a very strong antibiotic and potent agent that helps the body inhibits the ability of germs to grow and reproduce. Did you know that it's actually said that 1milligram of allicin has a potency of 15 standard units of penicillin?!
So you see, that's good natural stuff!!! Isn't it?!

Why parsley? Commonly used for garnish most people do not even realize that parsley has very important health properties. It's high in Vitamin C & A. I will take time soon to share more about parsley because I believe that it's health benefits are underestimated!

I am adding just 2 pieces of frozen bananas for sweetness considering that bananas are one of the sweetest fruit you could eat!  Bananas are great for your health and are kind of a super food because they have two times as many carbohydrates as an apple, five times as much Vitamin A and iron and three times as much phosphorus. In addition to that they are rich in potassium and natural sugars! That's why beside a little bit of honey there is no need to add any sugar to my blends when I put some bananas in! So I sometimes use bananas to sweeten my blends but I never use the whole banana because bananas are high in calories and I am on the path to slimming down remember? So I need to stay on tract no matter what I blend...

In addition to frozen bananas, I added some frozen apples to add sweetness and more good properties to my drink and I added some frozen blueberries as well. I did not use the strawberries.
Why blueberries? Among their many amazing health benefits blueberries are also an anti-depressant!  Did you know that?! Well anti-depressant is good because  on rainy days when you are not feeling the best you need to keep depression away, far away... (ha ha ha)! Blueberries are also great for the immune system which is perfect to prevent or fight a cold or a fever! Blueberries are full of antioxidants and contain many vitamins including Vitamin C, E, A and B complex. They also contain copper, selenium, iron and more other natural goodies!
I like to keep some frozen fruits in my freezer so that when needed I only take what I need and put the rest back in the freezer!

Step3: Ready to blend! I started with the Chop setting....

I added some 1/2 tablespoon of Flaxseed, some Apple Cide Vinegar and the following herbs for their healing properties:

Why Fennel?Fennel is useful in respiratory disorders such as congestion, bronchitis, cough, etc due to the presence of  Cineol and anetol which are expectorant in nature, among their many virtues! Among its other benefits fennel is a diuretic, incurring amount and frequency of urination thereby helping the removal of toxic substance from the body. It also helps relax the body, which I think is good for someone  not feeling well and it sharpens memory, another property of this natural ingredient I appreciate since I need my memory to get my work done!

Why Oregano? Oregano has strong antibacterial properties, one ounce of oregano is thought to be of the most antioxidant dense of all food! It has 42 times the antioxidants of apple. Amazing isn't it?!
I actually planted some fresh oregano on my deck a couple of weeks ago, but I used the powder version because I did not even remember until now that I have some fresh one available!

Why turmeric? Turmeric helps with inflammation and relieves headaches which are something I want to prevent , for more on turmeric check my article on the Benefits of turmeric it's loaded with information that might greatly surprise you and very few people are familiar with turmeric  http://goodhealthdiva.blogspot.com/2011/01/benefits-of-turmeric.html

To finish it up, I set the blender on Smoothie after I added some of my daily supplements. Fish oil that I started taking recently and Vitamin B12 that I have been taking for about a month now. This drink will be my breakfast! I added 1/2 tbsp of honey not just for sweetness but for the healing benefits of honey against colds.

My results after blending! I did not add any water or any liquid beside the citrus juice I made...

At last: Ready to savour by topping it with some Fresh Mint from the garden!

I said savour and some of you might think that this blend is not delicious just because it has so many vegetables and herbs! You would be surprised! It has a tangy taste because of the citrus juice but it is naturally sweet too! Remember that the bananas, the apples and the honey added some natural sweetness to this blend so no need for sugar. Due to the fact that the bananas, apples and blueberries were frozen it added some good texture to the drink! With all the fibers from the carrots this truly is not a drink that you can swallow within seconds like some apple juice ! So I made time to enjoy drinking it!

Below is what my carrot blends normally look like, so as I said earlier, today I had to step up my game!

Now, last thing here: It's one thing to blend all that and wait on the properties to kick in and heal me from the inside but my mind has to go with the flow too! Can't have healing half way, it got to be the whole package! So one thing I always do it to take care of my appearance and my surroundings especially if I am not feeling the best! Chaos frustrates me so that can't help me feel good, right?! On days I might not feel the best, I think that the way I dress and carry myself play a role too in my quick recovery. I think that if people act and constantly talk sick they will feel sick longer. I truly believe that Good health is also a mental thing!

So as I act and talk health I get to feel healthier and become healthier! So even though I was not feeling the best when I first got out of bed this morning, I still showered, got dressed as if I was 'going somewhere', that's a diva thing you know ha ha ha, got my hair done in an updo and got rolling with my day!
I didn't have the zeal to be running a bunch of errands today but at least I am feeling and looking  better than someone who probably could have spent all day in bed! I am still being productive from the comfort of my Mom cave!(see below)

Now, I might not look radiant at this point but I don't look like someone who should be laying in bed! Right?! Ha! Ha! That's the good-health-diva for you!

Sometimes this morning in my mom cave working on my laptop, with my cold remedy drink by my side!

A glance at my cave, the right place to find refuge on days like today ( rainy  and grey day when my body and mind need  both a boost and some rest.....)

It's exactly 5:42pm now and since drinking this drink hours ago I have been feeling pretty well , not exhuberant but relatively well!  All the fiber in the drink has also kept my appetite into check! Yes the diuretic properties in the drink have worked their virtues so did all the vitamin C that got in my system the Natural way! I meant the N'natural way! (lol)

This being said, I hope that in sharing all that you did learn something new! Did you learn something new?  Were you aware of the healing properties of all those ingredients? Which one were you very surprised to read about? How do you normaly prevent and/or fight a cold?

Natural hair: Deep conditioning recipe for stronger and healthy hair

I have a simple treatment  that I love to do on my daughter's natural hair and wanted to share with you. The previous post is actually a French version that I wrote to encourage my readers who are not fluent in English to feel welcomed on this blog.
The treatment simply calls  for 1 tbsp of honey and 2 tbsp of extra virgin olive oil that you would mix with your conditioner. Reserve some apple cider vinegar for your rinse. Here are the simple steps.
  • Shampoo your hair as usual
  • Apply the mixture of honey, olive oil and conditioner ( you can do that with just honey and olive oil)  to your hair until your hair are fully saturated with your mixture. Sit under a hot dryer or simply leave it on.
  • Leave it on for 30-45 minutes.
  • Rinse thoroughly with water and a little of apple cider vinegar
  • Apply some of your conditioner mixture as a leave in- conditioner and
  • Complete your treatment by applying any of the following oils: coconut oil, almond oil, olive oil, jojoba oil or any carrier oil of your choosing. I personally stick to the first three simply because they are easier to find.
On my daughter's hair below I applied some almond oil after rinsing her hair and applying a little bit of the conditioning mixture.
Please share with me some of your own homemade hair treats.
Three oils I love using for hair care

Ingredients for this homemade deep conditioning

In the small white bowl honey and olive oil (to mix with or w/o the conditioner) after shampooing

With the shower cap on waiting 30-45 minutes with the deep conditioner on

Soft and shiny hair after deep conditioning and Almond oil to seal her hair.

What kitchen ingredients do you generally use for your homemade deep conditionner? Which of the oila listed above do you use most often on your hair?

Un bon traitement pour avoir les cheveux lustrants

J'offre aujourd'hui un conseil de cheveux pour mes amis francophones qui ne maitrisent pas bien la langue anglaise afin qu'ils se sentent tous encourager de joindre ce site. ( English readers I will post this post in English by Friday so please come back for this one and enjoy the other posts you haven't read yet)
