Healthy meals & healthy snacks: How to make grilled Okra.
Grilled Okra.
How to make a quick & healthy snack with Okra
by Goodhealthdiva
My ingredients of choice: Olive oil, homemade seasoning mix with salt, and ground oregano.
10 minutes later....after snacking on some as I was grilling the rest, here's what's left...
The meal version:
That's the only grilling I did on the 4th of July.
Healthy eating: Grilled Okra
by Goodhealthdiva
My husband and I used to enjoy eating grilled Okra at a local restaurant known for their BBQ sauces. I started getting tired of their grilled Okra because their Okra was sometime overcooked and not always attractive. It seemed like we were sometimes given leftovers and that the okras has been warmed over and over again.
I decided to make my own from now on and... boy oh boy... what a great idea.
1 pound fresh Okra from a local Indian store.
Washed and rinsed with white vinegar and water.
Seasoned with homemade seasoning mix (Turmeric, salt, ground and dried Oregano) & Olive oil.
5 to 10 minutes of the grill

A healthy and inexpensive meal for 2...
Ready to chow and happy that...
I can now enjoy fresh Okra, seasoned with my favorite herbs, and for only $2 the pound versus $2.50 for a small serving.
Do you also like okra? How do you prefer yours? Do you have a favorite okra recipe? Please share it here or on our Facebook page "Healthy can be done"

Natural Skincare & Green living: Ways To Reuse Coffee and Make a Coffee Body Scrub
"Hey!!!Don't waste this"!!! These are the words I tend to tell my husband, my kids and my friends when it comes to certain things. I make sure that leftover water and leftover tea are poured on plants and when it comes to coffee it's no exception. So, I just I wanted to take some time to share some of my simple ideas for re-using coffee and hope to learn something from you guys in return!
Picture taken at a local Starbuck! |
As a plant lover I learned that coffee and leftover tea, are good plant food!,
Simply pour your leftover coffee on your indoor or outdoor plants. The coffee grounds can also be used as compost. I always make sure to get some extra leftover coffee grounds from the coffee shop. It's great nutrition for acid loving plants and I must say it also seems to do some good to all my indoor tropical plants.
In the kitchen I found that rubbing some coffee on my fingers with ground coffee work as a good odor remover, especially if I had handle fish, garlic or anything smelly. It works well too in the garbage disposal to deodorize and disinfect. The leftover coffee can also be used as a fridge deodorizer, simply place a small bowl filled with fresh coffee grounds in your fridge.
I love the smell of coffee so much that it's my room deodorizer of choice during the winter months. I simply brew some fresh coffee when I need to fill the house with a pleasant aroma! You can actually put some leftover coffee grounds on a cooking sheet and place it in a warm over, but I just prefer brewing.
Leftover coffee can also be used to:
Picture taken at a local Starbuck. |
- Make some frappucino
- Marinate your meat
- Replace red wine when cooking meat in recipes calling for wine!
- Flavor cake or waffle recipes ( replacing milk or water for coffee)
- Mix with condensed milk and freeze as popsicle.
Make ice cubes. Why wait on a super hot coffee to cool down when you can just throw a coffee cube in?!
Well there must be many other ways to use leftover cofee in the kicthen but that's my little tried and true repertoire here!
It's also possible to use leftover coffee as a dye! You can use your leftover coffee to dye paper or fabric to give it an aged look.
Did you know you can also add it to the wash water when you wash your dark color clothes?! It's also a good dye as beauty hair treatment if you have dark hair. Apply about 5-6 cups of leftover coffee to your wet hair and cover and leave it on your hair from about 15-20 mns before rinsing! But it's only a temporary dye I can not claim that it will work like Garnier!
Since I love hanging at perfumes counters and shopping for candles I also learned to use it to trick my olfactory senses. Carry along some leftover coffee beans or grounds and inhale them after smelling a perfume! It neutralizes the scent of the fragrance you smelled previously and help you to better sense the following fragrance.
And as to my favorite use of leftover coffee grounds, a little messy I should admit but very rewarding, I use it as a scrub! Yep! I love to use leftover coffee grounds as a facial scrub or a body scrub in the shower.
MAKING COFFEE SCRUB
2 cups coarse coffee. I prefer to just recycle the one I freshly brewed
1/2 sea salt or brown sugar. I skip that step most times
3 tbsp. oil such as olive, coconut, sweet almond, jojoba etc
A drop of scented oil of choices. Totally optional!
The only inconvenience is having the grounds over the shower floor and in...well...let's say that I advise wearing a swim suit bikini when you decide to use it as a full body scrub! I don't know if it's the pleasure of rubbing something totally organic on my body, or feeling like I am giving myself what could have been an expensive spa treatment from the comfort of my home, but I love love love the way my skin feels afterward! It's best to use fresh ground coffee as it still have many of it's antioxidant property when it's fresh. Like 20-30 minutes after you have brewed some since it will need time to cool some.
So before you think it's a messy idea ( I am making a face)give it a try because you might love the way your skin feel afterward, it's worth trying!
So... no need to let that leftover coffee go to waste right?
What do you tend to do with your leftover coffee? If you tried or try to use is as a facial or body scrub please let me know what you think of it as a scrub! Have you heard that it's claimed to remove cellulite when used as a scrub on thighs and legs?
PLEASE JOIN US ON FACEBOOK WE WOULD LOVE TO MEET YOU THERE!

Benefits of Apple Cider for skin and hair
The post below was written by Gaurav Jaggi a fellow blogger from India who contacted me about his desire to write a post on a subject he specializes in. Since I use ACV daily and have also used it on my hair I figured it would be great to learn and share more on the subject.
Thanks for reading this article please share with us how you use Apple Cider Vinegar in your daily life and benefit from using it!
N'na
ACV for Gorgeous Skin and Great Hair by Gaurav Jaggi
First,
let’s just say that we all want great skin and hair; hence we invest so much in
hair and skin products. We can never
tell what the perfect skin product is and advertisers don’t make it any easier
to know what product to settle for.
Skin
and hair differs, so do the products we are supposed to use in maintain them,
so what do you do if you aren’t sure what to buy and how do you know if what
you buy is really what your hair or skin needs?
Well
here is what I think is quick answer to all that: Apple Cider Vinegar
There
are numerous Apple
Cider Vinegar benefits and it is your solution to great
hair and skin for the following reasons:
Fewer Toxins, Great Skin
A
liver with few toxins is a great liver and a great liver translates to great
skin. Drinking a solution of apple cider vinegar in water up to three times in
a day promotes great liver functions. It reduces the toxins in the body making
your skin clearer and healthier looking.
Washing with apple cider vinegar directly also
promotes great skin however the ratio of water to apple cider vinegar should be
10% apple cider vinegar dissolved in water and you wash using a cotton wool or
a soft cloth.
Shiny Healthy Hair, a Rinse Away
Don’t
we all hate having dandruff? It seems
hard, costly and frustrating to try to get rid of dandruff yet there’s a very
simple, affordable and effective solution: Apple Cider Vinegar
Vinegar,
first of all, helps to promote the health of your scalp, while the solution of apple
cider vinegar can eliminate dandruff and maintain the volume of your hair by
reducing hair loss.
Better
yet, apple cider vinegar is best for removing styling products that have
accumulated over the years from styling your hair.
In
order for this to work for you, wash your hair and rinse in the solution of
water and apple cider vinegar, make sure the solution reaches your scalp. Let
it rest for up to 30 minutes, then rinse. You should do this minimally, once a
week.
The Mother, Apple Cider Vinegar
To
get the best from apple cider vinegar, you should go for the ‘mother’ – this is
basically the suspended liquid formed when you age apples (organically grown),
in a wooden barrels, ‘the mother’ is pungent and slightly dark brown and in the
light it’s feathery and cobweb like. This is a sign of good ‘mother’
Remember,
apple cider vinegar has been used for year for its many medicinal purposes. Raw
unpasteurized apple cider vinegar contains all the enzymes and life improving
nutrients that are good for your health and that of your hair and skin. You can
find out more about Apple
cider vinegar benefits.

Benefits of detoxing: How and why to detox
Detox 101 : How and why to detox
Hi there,
I have a few friends who have asked about detoxing recently so I figured it would be great to share some basic tips with you as well.
Spring is around the corner and it's a great time to consider doing a detox and do a " Spring cleanse". Detoxing can ideally be done every 3 months, but doing one early Fall/Winter and one early Spring are good times as well.
So below I am offering some general tips on detoxing that I hope will benefit and inspire you to detox.
There are different kinds of cleanses you can do and if you have never detoxed before a candida cleanse, a colon, liver and kidney cleanse are generally most recommended to free your body from toxins that have affected your health. Some cleanses can be done in 7 days, 14 days, 21 or 30 days. Embracing a healthier lifestyle and eating habits are crucial to further benefit from your detox.

Disclaimers: The suggestions below are not to replace doctors' advices. If you have certain medical conditions you should consult your doctor before starting a detox program or eliminating some things from your diet or adding to it.
Why should you detox?
We live a very toxic lifestyle and in spite of our best efforts to make healthy choices our surroundings, foods and cosmetics are loaded with toxins.
What are some benefits of detoxing?
- Cleanse your body from toxins
- Give your organs a chance to rest and work better
- Give you more energy
- Naturally heals your body from certain ailments : you get less headaches, less diseases and sicknesses throughout the year.
- Better skin and complexion
- Give you a clearer sense of thinking and feeling
- More willpower and more positive outlook on life
- Weight loss (detoxing assits with weight loss because your organs working better once you give your body a chance to release toxins, bacteria, fecal matter etc).

Which organs can mostly benefit from a detox?
Your whole body can benefit from a detox but some organs play a major role in the quality of our health such as:
- the kidneys
- the liver
- the colon
There is actually various kind of cleanses:
Candida cleanses, parasite cleanses, kidneys & liver cleanses, colon cleanses, colonics, lung cleanses, total body cleanses etc. Each one is beneficial to your health and for optimal health it's recommended to do them all especially if you have never detoxed before.

When to detox? At least twice a year such as Spring and Fall.
Please consider Fasting. Fasting is probably the best way to detox your body and your mind. It’s important to fast often. Fitting a one day fast weekly/biweekly or a 3 days fast in your monthly schedule are all reasonable endeavor. ( Please consult with your physician before embarking in any fast)
Keep in mind that while you are detoxing you might experience some headaches, you will have to take more frequent trips to the bathroom as your body must flush out many toxins, bacteria, fecal matter etc. Do not stop the detox on account of these as it's actually a proof that the detox was much needed but PLEASE if you suffer from any particular health condition consult with your physician before, during and after your detox.
To Jumpstart your detox.
Gradually eliminate or cut down certain foods from your daily diet.
Gradually add more healthy food and drink more water.
Drink every morning a glass of water with apple cider vinegar, freshly squeeze lemon juice and a spoon of honey.
Eat daily one or more grapefruits and/or apple.
Select a detox program and time frame as you can detox for 3 days, 14, 21, 30 days or longer.

Detox products on the market
There are many great products on the markets.
Please do your research before selecting a product. When selecting a product take time to ask questions, explain your goals, research the ingredients included and their roles and be aware of the fact that a detox program will not necessarily feel good at first!

Detox hygiene

Avoid beauty products that are harmful and loaded with toxins because your skin is your largest organ. Use organic, green or homemade beauty & cosmetics products.

During the time when you are detoxing avoid if you can and if it's not your workplace places such as Nail shop and Beauty Salon or any environment that would expose you to toxins.
Consider dry skin brushing before taking a shower.
Consider oil cleansing to cleanse your face.
Detoxing is about more than food & the body.
Detoxing is not just about food. There are emotional triggers to the food that we eat and habits strongly influenced or influencing our food choices.
Other things to consider when detoxing:
Rest your mind and body more.
Cut down or temporarily eliminate on TV time especially news and TV shows that cause the body stress. Cut down on activities or interactions that are unpleasant and unnecessary.
Train your mind each morning to expect the best.
Refrain from complaining unnecessarily focusing on negative things create more stress on your body.
Take time to start your day with a stretch as stretching allows trapped energy to be released.
Stretch often throughout the day.
see the benefits of stretching http://goodhealthdiva.blogspot.com/2011/05/benefits-of-exercising-stretching.html

Walk more during the day.
Spread more love and do good more good deeds.
Smile and laugh more. ( Being scornful, sarcastic and laughing at the expenses of others is NOT what I recommend).
Keep a journal. Record your emotions, your goals…
Keep a gratitude journal. Make time each day to write things you are grateful for and start and finish each day by expressing verbally or in writing something you are grateful for.
DETOX your environment.
Make time to go through your home, bathroom, closet, kitchen cabinets, home office and remove everything old, expired, useless etc.
In your closet get rid of everything stained, with holes, old and that no longer fit.
Declutter and cleam your space totally. A messy and dirty environment can also trigger stress and expose you to toxins.
Add some green plants in your home to purify your indoor air.

If you consider fasting:
Disclaimer: Please consult with your physician before starting a fast.
Days before your fast drink plenty of water and eat more fruits and vegetables that are rich in water such as watermelon and cucumbers.
Determine the length of your fast. A meal, a whole day, a few days. Any longer fast should be supervised.
The way you break your fast is very important. Eat foods that are light such as a fruit, a bowl of soup, a salad and eat slowly.
There's a lot more to detoxing than the information I just provided. This article is meant to be an introduction and offer you some direction.
Detoxing is essential to your health and organs' cleanses such as the Colon cleanses can improve your health and even assist with weight loss.
Detoxing has the power to heal, alleviate or prevent some conditions, so do it often and enjoy its many benefits.

The benefits of vacations: Fun in Orlando Florida
Hello friends and readers old and new. Thanks for stopping by!
It's been a couple of weeks since my last posting.
I was simply busy with a few things and enjoying some time in the "Sunshine State".
I can't believe that the last time I went to Florida was when I was a college student. It felt so good to return to the "Sunshine State" especially at this time of the year. My children got the pleasure of visiting Florida for the very first time and it felt good to acquaint them right here on the continental USA with small pleasurable details of my upbringing.
I was so delighted to see once again natural elements that surrounded me during my own childhood. Things such as...
Palm trees,
Birds of Paradise
and other tropical flowers like the one below that grew in my backyward and that reminded me of my tropical homeland
I must say the weather and the environment made me pretty nostalgic! What added to the pleasure of being down South is the warmth and hospitality I felt where I stayed and the candor of the many people I met not just as locals but from other parts of the world. ( Canada, Brazil, Australia, just to name a few)
Above is one of my chilling spot for the past evenings...
Well, it's getting late I just wanted to catch up and say a brief hello.
I will share more pictures later so better stay tuned. For now check the link below for more pictures of the spot where I have been "chillaxing" in Orlando. Right across from :

as a matter of fact here's the real view from across the hotel

Oh, I am doing well, pregnancy is going quite well Praise God! I am feeling blessed and hope you are as well.
I am leaving you with this video that I am working on, it's a work in progress but it gives you an idea of what's up with me (smiles)

That's all for tonight! Have a great week !
Are you a Florida resident or fan? What's do you like most about Florida? What do you like most about Orlando?

The benefits of exercising -Introduction
Hello you all! This is a quick note because I am ready to venture through this rain here and go do some shoppiiiing. Naaah not clothes. I am shopping for some craft material and inspiration for the cards I have to design for a few customers! I will share those pictures soon on my craft blog! (Click the Card's picture on the top right to access the link)
I wanted to take a minute to encourage you to take your week-end to plan your healthier life!
The weather is getting better so no more excuses that you can't walk because it's too cold or don't feel like going to the gym etc!
Having some sunshine and this much needed Vitamin D that your body needs to fight some laziness, boost your mood and get you more active is certainly a plus to plan a successful regimen this Spring)
Okay, so the weather is no longer cold but now it's getting warmer and heat can discourage you to work out just as fast as the cold did! Don't make excuses and don't despair just keep reading for inspiration...
First of all, if you have a problem staying disciplined or having a strong jumpstart, just do this :
Plan your workout, write it down in your planner, as a reminder, whatever but just like you make an appointment to go to the dentist mark it!!!!
If you plan on spending 30 minutes-1hr walking, doing an aerobic class once or three days a week, write it down! By doing this you will be motivated, committed and accountable, to yourself at least!
Think about it this way, many things in life seem to have enough priority for you to do it and ensure that you do it, well...isn't your health a priority? No but!!! Write it down!!!
If you don't like working out alone find a work-out buddy but please DO not use it as an excuse! If you have a work out buddy who can't make it to some of your planned workouts do not use it as an excuse to cancel it unless it's late in the evening! If you have to work out alone then do it! You are first responsible for your own health so do not use a lack of partner as an excuse! Only you know how important it is for you to be fit! Nobody can't make you healthier unless you want it for yourself! Your efforts might actually motivate others to follow your lead as they watch you being so committed and getting results!
Two: If you intend on exercising outdoors please plan it in the morning before 10 a.m if you can (on a hot day)! Do it before it heats up! Or after 2:30 pm. Regardless of the time of day preferrably look for shade, pick a path, a park, an area where you can benefit from some shade.
If you can't work out in the morning do it in the evening! Ladiiies, please take a buddy with you if you plan on excersing in the later parts of the day. I recommend exercising before it gets dark but as long as you pick a safe area in the company of a strong and brave man by your side I suppose you will be allllriiight!!! Do not go out late and alone now! I say exercise but I am also saying be safe and smart! No need to endanger yourself by being brave and trying to go on a walk or run in late hours.
Three: Wear appropriate clothing each time you exercise and for added safety ladies limit jewelry and keep you hair pulled in a ponytail. You will be surprised by how many accidents can occur with our hair looses or a necklace, bracelet or rings getting caught in something!
Four: When exercising outdoors keep your safety in mind, be aware of your surroundings, tell someone where you are going and how long to expect you gone, depending on the form of exercise and where you are heading keep an emergency card/IDwith you and always carry some water with you.
Five: Last but not least for today: Always drink some water before, during and after you are exercising especially if it's longer than 20-30 minutes! Dehydration is dangerous for your body in more ways than you think!
Okay got to go, hope this post motivates you to get rolling! Have a great week-end!

Natural skin care: The benefits of almond oil for skin care and beyond skin care
I was reading some posts on a new blog I follow and I thought it was super funny. In one of her post, Nisha was talking about how she spent money on cosmetics and mentioned that her aunt believes in the virtue of natural products.
I had planned to write today about the benefits of almond oil and in introducing this post I think it's worth mentionning one thing. I believe in " old-wives tales" as Nisha put it in her blog entry " Face value" . (smiles)
I believe that God in His divine wisdom had initially created the garden of Eden with more beauty, power and mysteries that we could ever fathom. The more I learn about the benefits of a fruit, a vegetable, an oil, the more I am mesmerized by the amazing gifts the universe have freely doted us with. I don't have a bananas tree, a coconut tree or a avocado tree in my backyard like I did as a child and today more than ever I wish I did.
I took so much for granted as a child but we still take much for granted as adults. Sharing the benefits of natural products is my way to embrace the best of nature and of God's gifts to us. It's also my way of living a better life with as few chemicals as possible.
Today I wanted to talk about Almond oil. Some know it as a carrier oil for massages, some are aware that it's added to many cosmetic products on the shelves in our beauty stores but very few people know it's many benefits...I hope that learning more about it will encourage you to add it in your beauty regimen and your daily life because it's benefits exceed skin care...

Almonds are some of the healthiest nuts to eat but they are not just healthy in their solid form. Almonds are greatly beneficial even as oil.
Almond oil is one of the many vegetables oil that is often used as a carrier oil in aromatherapy. It's a great base oil for essential oils used for massages because it's not as oily as other oils, it a great emollient and moisturizer and it's very absorbent.
Rich in vitamin E it also contains magnesium, calcium, and vitamin D.
Did you know that almond oil is similar in composition to the oil babies excrete to keep their skin and hair healthy?! I think it's a better substitute to Baby oil that contains toxic minerals. Sweet almond oil is pure and healthier.
So in addition to being a great massage oil, almond oil is great for your hair, for your health and for your skin. It's great for all skin types and a great treatment for dry skins.
I had planned to write today about the benefits of almond oil and in introducing this post I think it's worth mentionning one thing. I believe in " old-wives tales" as Nisha put it in her blog entry " Face value" . (smiles)

Massage slowly in small circular motions and feel the comfort.Almond oil adds luster to the hair. I personnaly love to use it on my hair to add shine to them and because it doesn't weight them down, plus it seals them so well.

Remember that almond oil is rich in Vitamin E , the vitamin that's marvellous for anti-aging and skin protection from sunburn. So there you have a natural oil that's great for your skin and much cheaper than many of the cosmetics brand you rely on for anti-aging and skin protection. But please keep in mind that uses of almond oil is not safe for people allergic to nuts and that only pure and sweet almond oil is the kind of almond oil you want to use.
Now... with this being shared, when you consider that a bottle of almond oil will cost you less than $10.00
but very few products on the cosmetic aisles are that inexpensive and that rich in natural benefits wouldn't you say that the "old-wives tales" have a lot of truth to them?! ( I am smiling and thinking about Nisha). If you want the very best for your skin and things in their most effective form you will have to admit that few commercial products can brag to do so much for us.
Well, I have personally fallen in love with natural products and believe in them more than ever. But what about you?! Are you one who always have to purchase the best cosmetic advertised on TV or in the magazines?! Or do you believe in beauty practices that are easy on the wallet but strong on their rewards?! Do you often use almond oil?! How do you use it?!
